After five years, “Mortal Kombat” has returned to cinemas with a sequel to the 2021 video game adaptation, expanding its roster of iconic characters. The film, currently showing in theatres, introduces popular figures such as Johnny Cage, Kitana, Jade, Baraka, and the villainous Shao Kahn, as the Mortal Kombat tournament—an interdimensional battle for survival—begins.
The previous film had familiarised audiences with characters like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Liu Kang, while focusing on the narrative of a new protagonist, Cole Young. In this sequel, Johnny Cage occupies the central role, confronting various adversaries, including supernatural beings and revived fighters.
As in the preceding film and video game series, numerous characters meet violent deaths. Notably, Cole Young dies at the hands of Shao Kahn early in the tournament, and Liu Kang suffers a similar fate. However, Liu Kang’s potential resurrection hints at future developments, as he is transformed into a fire god, akin to Raiden. Following their victory over Shao Kahn, Johnny Cage, Kitana, and their allies start a quest to resurrect Liu Kang and Kung Lao, who perished in the first installment but is now reanimated by Shao Kahn’s forces.
The film raises questions regarding the survival and return of its characters, particularly as it sets the stage for a potential third installment. As the narrative unfolds, the characters face moral dilemmas and sacrificial choices, solidifying the franchise’s enduring appeal.
