Graduation season has begun in the United States, bringing speeches from well-known figures to worried students. Many graduates feel anxious due to student debt and a difficult job market. Recently, at the University of Central Florida, Vice President Gloria Caulfield spoke about the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) during a ceremony. When she mentioned AI, students loudly booed her, showing their dislike for the topic. Caulfield commented on the sudden backlash and noted how AI has changed our lives.
Other speakers faced similar reactions. On May 10, Scott Borchetta, CEO of Big Machine Records, spoke at Middle Tennessee State University. He compared AI to an unused musical instrument, but students interrupted him. Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt also received boos when he spoke at the University of Arizona about AI’s role in society.
Many students worry about AI’s negative effects on their futures, including job opportunities and social issues. They see AI as a problem rather than a helpful tool. However, Delta CEO Ed Bastian connected well with graduates when he said he had used AI for his speech but decided to write a more personal message. Students responded positively to his honesty.
