Geologists Discover Rare Find While Searching for Gold

Geologists found something rare in Western Australia. They were looking for gold but discovered an ancient meteorite impact site instead.

The scientists noticed strange results in their gravity studies. They found a circular shape under the ground. When they dug deeper, they saw that a powerful event once occurred there. This event melted rocks and created unusual patterns.

The meteorite, rich in iron, crashed to Earth a long time ago. It is now called the Ora Banda impact structure. This is only the second site confirmed to be fully within very old rocks.

The scientists believe such impacts played an important role in Earth’s history. They think meteorites may have brought water and life-building materials to our planet long ago.

At Ora Banda, signs of the impact were hard to find. Erosion and other natural events hid it well. The researchers discovered layers of rock that showed signs of shock damage from the impact. They also found tiny gold pieces that may have been blasted into the air when the meteorite hit.
