New CDC Guidelines Released on Using Doxycycline for STI Prevention
A multidisciplinary team of CDC physicians worked together to develop new guidelines on using doxycycline to prevent bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea. By reviewing various studies published through June 2023, the team aimed to determine if taking doxycycline after sexual activity could reduce the risk of acquiring these infections. The evidence was carefully evaluated and recommendations were made using a systematic approach similar to established health guidelines.
In addition, experts, stakeholders, and community members discussed the benefits and potential harms of using doxycycline during a recent virtual consultation. Ethical considerations were also taken into account, with bioethics experts and community advocates providing valuable insights.
Peer reviewers from diverse backgrounds in infectious diseases and STI prevention were involved in the process of refining the guidelines, ensuring a comprehensive and unbiased approach. The final recommendations were developed with input from CDC staff and are now available for public comment before implementation.
