Bob Newhart, who went from standup comedy to sitcom star, dies at 94

Bob Newhart, a former accountant who lived with his parents at 30, transformed into a beloved comedian with nationwide fame. Born in 1929, he lived to 94, passing away on July 18. His humor influenced many comedians including Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Cosby. Prior to doing stand-up, Newhart had never performed in a nightclub. Yet, his comedic routines swiftly shot him to stardom.

Newhart’s first comedy album, “The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart,” became a huge hit. It topped the Billboard charts in 1960, even surpassing Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley’s pop and rock albums. During his nightclub debut, he recorded this album, which sold more than 100 million copies. Newhart was the only comedian to win Grammy Awards for both best new artist and album of the year.

Finally, he starred in two popular sitcoms, “The Bob Newhart Show” and “Newhart”. He always played the “straight man” role, making one-sided phone calls full of desperate conversations, which the audience found hilarious. Even after the spotlight of starring roles faded, he remained active in the entertainment industry well into his 80s. News of his death was confirmed by his publicist, although no cause was given.
