A meteor about 3 feet wide entered the Earth’s atmosphere near Massachusetts and New Hampshire. It made a loud boom over Southern New England on Saturday afternoon.
The American Meteor Society said the meteor broke apart before hitting the ground. NASA confirmed this event at 2:06 p.m. It moved at a speed of around 75,000 miles per hour. The meteor broke apart at a height of 40 miles above northeastern Massachusetts and southeastern New Hampshire. The loud sound came from the energy of the meteor, which was like a large explosion.
Many people heard the noise. People from nearby towns said their houses shook when the sound happened. NOAA’s satellite saw a bright flash near Massachusetts Bay, likely from the meteor.
Most meteors are small, like grains of sand. This meteor was much larger. A meteor becomes a meteorite if it touches the ground. It seems this one did not reach the ground.
