A judge in California has decided that Netflix must go to court. This is because a woman from Scotland, Fiona Harvey, says they have damaged her reputation. She is upset at their show called “Baby Reindeer”. This show is about a man being stalked by a woman.
The judge said that how the show shows this woman might not be fair to the real woman. It could make people think differently of her. Netflix says they will defend their right to tell this story.
In the show, the woman stalks a man. She sends him over 40,000 emails and leaves long voice messages. The show became very popular. Many people tried to find out who the real woman is.
In the real world, Harvey says she is different from the woman in the show. She says she hasn’t done all the bad things which the show said the woman did.
The judge says there is a big difference between some acts and crimes. Being creepy is not the same as being a criminal. Touching without asking is not the same as hurting someone badly. The judge also says that Netflix might have known that they were not telling the complete truth.
Netflix did not win their argument. They will have to go to court. But the judge did say that some of Harvey’s other complaints will not go to court.
