Most Pixel phone users don’t usually give much thought to the modem of their device. Unfortunately, connectivity issues have forced many to address this overlooked aspect. Over the years, these issues have been a significant challenge for the Pixel series. However, with each new generation of Pixel phones, the situation has noticeably improved, and the forthcoming Pixel 9 series promises further enhancements.
According to an insider from Google, important modem upgrades are expected for the Pixel 9 series. Among them is the provision for satellite connectivity. Despite having started with software stability issues when Google switched to semi-custom Tensor chips in 2021, the condition improved as the platform matured. The Exynos Modem 5300 used in the Pixel 8 series reduced the problems. While there have been incidents of troubles after the March 2024 update, it’s promising to see improvements.
The new Samsung Modem 5400 coming with the Tensor G4 in the Pixel 9 series is a significant upgrade. It is expected to be faster and more power-efficient than its predecessors. Alongside these improvements, Google has upgraded the software stack for the modems. As an added bonus, they will support 5G non-terrestrial networks (NTN), which includes satellite-based communication.
All cellular-friendly Tensor G4 devices, including the Pixel 9 series and the next-gen Pixel Fold, will feature this modem. Google is also reportedly developing a 5G tablet using the same modem.
Undoubtedly, the most significant aspect of this upgrade is the support for satellite-based communications. In collaboration with T-Mobile and SpaceX, Google has made substantial advances in integrating this technology. Moreover, emergency services can now be easily communicated with via the “Emergency SOS” feature in the new “Satellite Gateway” app.
While Google may not have partnered with Qualcomm for the modem upgrade, any improvement that reduces issues is certainly welcomed.
