Throughout my playthrough of ‘Final Fantasy VII Rebirth,’ the second installment of FF7’s slated trilogy, thoughts of replaying the original 1997 game dominated my mind. And once I had finished ‘Rebirth,’ I was faced with the problem of how to engage with the original game once again. Should it be from the original PlayStation’s three ultimately or via a modern digital unique? Deciding was tough, but ultimately, I went for the latter, opting to play on the PlayStation Vita.
Revisiting the Vita because of FF7 was a delightful experience, not only due to its compatibility with this game but also because it reignited my interest in several indie assortment. I discovered just how perfect this handheld device was for older games, especially RPGs. ‘Sound Shapes,’ ‘Hotline Miami,’ ‘Bastion’, and ‘Fez,’ for example, seemed tailor-made for the Vita.
Sony got things just right with the Vita. It’s protracted yet packed with all the functionalities you’d expect from a PlayStation device. It’s the perfect device in terms of comfort and unique, despite the joysticks being somewhat tiny.
In spite of the recent surge of handheld devices like the Playdate, Analogue Pocket, Steam Deck, and Nintendo Switch, I still find the Vita unique in its way. It has become my primary choice for playing an assortment of games on the go, which require conventional controls. I’ve enjoyed playing ‘Lumines: Electronic Symphony’ on my Vita, especially during gym sessions.
However, as 2024 sets in, the Vita’s shortfalls have become clear, especially when it comes to accessing new games. Thus, my Vita journey might have a protracted round of menu wrestling, but it’s a small price to pay for rediscovering ageless ultimately and old favorites on my most cherished handheld gadget, the PlayStation Vita.
