Denza, the premium automotive brand of BYD, has announced that its Z9 GT performance electric vehicle (EV) will soon arrive in Europe, accompanied by advanced 1,500kW charging technology. This news is significant as it highlights a shift towards faster charging solutions in the electric vehicle market.
BYD’s Flash Charging stations, already established in China, deliver over three times the output of standard ultra-fast charging points. These stations can charge an EV from 10% to 70% in just five minutes and from 10% to 97% in nine minutes, even in extreme cold conditions of -30°C.
The Denza Z9 GT is built on a specialised e3 platform, featuring a 122kWh Blade Battery that allows for a range of 800km (approximately 500 miles) in the rear-wheel-drive version. A high-performance variant of the Z9 GT features three electric motors, generating over 960 horsepower, allowing for a 0-62mph acceleration in under three seconds. Both models are set to go on sale in April.
Upon its release in China, the Z9 GT quickly gained popularity, becoming the fastest luxury electric GT to achieve 10,000 deliveries, with more than 5,000 orders placed within 36 hours of its launch. Although European pricing remains unconfirmed, Chinese prices range from 443,900 yuan (around £35,000) to 384,800 yuan (approximately £40,000).
Despite potential price increases in Europe due to taxes and import fees, Denza could still position itself competitively against established automotive brands like Porsche and Audi. This competitive pricing may reshape the market for premium electric vehicles significantly.
Looking ahead, BYD aims to establish 2,000 Flash Charging stations across Europe by the end of 2026, primarily targeting the UK, Germany, Italy, France, and Spain. This initiative will advance the infrastructure necessary for high-speed charging, enhancing the company’s presence in the European EV market.
