NASA plans to build a Moon Base near the Moon’s south pole. Two companies, Astrolab and Lunar Outpost, are working to create vehicles for astronauts. They hope to finish by the end of 2027.
Last month, NASA chose both companies to make lunarterrain vehicles. They will deliver these vehicles next year. Originally, NASA planned to select just one company, but they decided to have two designs instead.
Both companies will make vehicles that do not need to last ten years on the Moon. They must be ready for the first crewed landing of NASA’s Artemis program, which is set for early 2028.
Astrolab’s vehicle is called the CrewedLunar Vehicle (CLV-1). It will carry astronauts and materials. Lunar Outpost is working on the Pegasus rover. It will help astronauts during their Moon missions.
Both companies face challenges. They must build vehicles that can survive the cold nights on the Moon. They aim to keep the vehicles warm using batteries. NASA is also working with Blue Origin to ensure proper launches.
