Starting Saturday, stores in New York must accept cash payments.
The new law starts on March 21. All food stores and shops in the state must take cash for items and services. The law also says businesses cannot charge more for cash payments.
Attorney General Letitia James said this law is important. She said all New Yorkers have the right to pay how they want. They should not be deniedaccess to things they need, like food and clothes, just because they pay in cash.
Bayport Flower Houses is a business that sells flowers. The manager, Amy Auwaerter, said they already accept cash. They are ready for the new law.
The law applies to restaurants and bars too. There are some exceptions. Stores do not have to accept bills over $20. They only need to take cash in person.
Customers can report stores that do not follow this law. The state can fine (penalise) stores that break the rules. Fines can be up to $1,000 for the first time and $1,500 for later offences.
